GLP-1 medications are a safe, medically guided option to help with weight management, but they are not meant to be a quick fix. They work best when combined with healthy lifestyle changes such as balanced nutrition and regular physical activity.
What are GLP-1s?
GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as Semaglutide and Liraglutide) are medications that were originally developed for type 2 diabetes. They work by mimicking a natural hormone in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps control blood sugar and appetite. There are currently 12 FDA approved GLP-1 receptor agonists for use in type 2 diabetes and/or obesity.
How GLP-1s work:
They stimulate release of insulin and lowers blood sugar
They slow stomach emptying, which reduces appetite
They help patients feel full for longer periods of time
Together, these effects often lead to weight loss, making GLP-1 medications a powerful partner in weight management. Clinical studies show that these medications do more than support
weight loss. They can also improve blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of heart disease. In clinical trials, people taking semaglutide lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks.
What you need to know:
Medical supervision is essential
GLP-1s should be prescribed and monitored ONLY by a licensed clinician. Programs that combine medication with nutrition counseling and metabolic (labs) tracking show the best outcomes.
Common Side Effects
You may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation when you first start the medications. Rare, but serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and diabetes-related eye disease getting worse.
Long-Term Commitment
The World Health Organization now recommends GLP-1s as a part of lifelong obesity care. Stopping the medication can lead to weight regain.
Not a standalone solution
It is very important to understand that making lifestyle changes such as balanced eating, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress management are critical to long-term success of weight management.
Every meaningful health journey begins with preparation. It is important to ask yourself:
Am I ready to commit to regular and ongoing medical supervision?
Do I understand the potential side effects and risks?
Am I prepared to make the necessary lifestyle changes?
GLP-1 medications make weight management more effective. Success comes from setting realistic goals, medical guidance and oversight, and sustainable lifestyle changes.
